William-Adolphe Bouguereau painted the masterpiece entitled The Elder Sister in 1869 and is currently located at the Museum of Fine Arts, in Houston, Texas. According to the information on the museum’s website, the painting was acquired in 1992 as an anonymous donation, and now it is part of the European art section of their permanent collection. The artist used his children as models for this artwork – his son, Paul, and his daughter, Henriette. In 1864, Bouguereau also painted an artwork with the same title, The Elder Sister.
As a master of classic painting and with a vast knowledge of anatomy, Bouguereau followed in the footsteps of past masters, especially Raphael, from the Renaissance. He mastered the technical standards imposed by the Academy and was praised by the critics for his production. The artist also participated in the yearly exhibit of the Paris Salon, the most prestigious opportunity for an artist to be acknowledged during this period. Bouguereau’s subject matter also pleased the traditionalists, as well as his wealthy patrons, as they were themes of ancient mythology, biblical figures – but often with a sensual twist and hidden meanings. His most famous paintings amongst his patrons were of nude goddesses, nymphs, and madonnas.
In the painting The Elder Sister, Bouguereau portrays a simple and heartwarming scene in a rural landscape. The young girl casually sits on a rock with one leg crossed, while the other leg rests over her ankle leaving one foot suspended. The artist wished to depict the modest life of the people living in the countryside, and this is reflected in the figure’s simple clothing, as well as their bare feet. The sister wears a white undershirt, with a black top over it and a long brown skirt, while the baby wears a blue shirt, a red bandana over his head, and is wrapped in a yellow blanket – a nod to the primary colors. The infant is relaxed in a deep sleep while being held in the girl's arms.
What grabs the viewer’s attention in this painting – like in many of Bouguereau’s portraits – is the girl’s eye contact. Her peaceful expression gives the artwork a warm and captivating atmosphere, which complements her gentle hands and pose. The background holds a beautiful and calm landscape with some trees, a field of grass, along with a pond and a bright sky filled with large clouds.
