William-Adolphe Bouguereau painted The Virgin With Angels, one of his iconic paintings in 1900, only five years before his death. The artist was famous for his classic and realistic portrayals of mythological and biblical themes – mostly female figures. Every element of his artwork was meticulously thought out – from the composition, the posture of the models, lighting, to his use of color – many times appropriating ancient symbology with hidden meanings.
The artwork The Virgin With Angels is currently located in Paris, at the Petit Palais. It portrays the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus in her arms – who are featured as the leading figures surrounded by angels. Mother Mary has a bland and peaceful expression on her face, and she looks down in an almost meditative state. She has rosy cheeks and lips, as does the infant baby. Bouguereau follows the classic western representation of Christ, with light, porcelain-like skin and golden blond hair. His light blue eyes stare directly at the viewer, and his arms are open in a gesture of peace. The artist depicts both of Mary’s hands in similar positions as if the baby in her arms was weightless. She stands in front of a large and ornamented thrown, demonstrating her authority of divine power. The nine white stars surrounding her head also signify a divine interference, similar to a halo.
Bouguereau placed about twenty angels around the central figures; some flying above, others standing beside them, and a few kneeling on the clouds in the forefront. Although the angels have the same facial features – a delicate female face with light skin and long blond hair – each figure is portrayed in various angle and with different expressions. All of the angels have large feathered wings on their backs and wear long white robes with golden details. The overall white atmosphere of the painting contrasts with Virgin Mary’s dark clothing. The mother of Christ wears a long red dress, and a dark blue, almost black, cloak with golden details, which covers her head. The way Bouguereau used this contrasting color scheme can be an indication of how Mary wasn’t on the same divine level as the angels or as her son. The artist also demonstrates Christ’s human condition by depicting him nude.
