Winslow Homer painted A Tropical Breeze, Nassau during his visit to the Bahamas in the winter of 1884-85. The artist also traveled to Cuba and Florida during this period to conclude a series of commissioned watercolor paintings for the Century Magazine. Homer fell in love with the new landscapes and painted many artworks during these trips.
In the past, Homer worked in Virginia during the American Civil War, where he would produce paintings of the dense scenes he saw. The artist had a strong view of the war and made many political statements in his paintings. During the period of Reconstruction, the country’s atmosphere was of peace and establishing a new balance, which reflected on many artists – including Homer who had a renewed optimism in his work. It was during the early 1870s that the American artist began dedicating his time to watercolor painting.
Before meeting the Impressionists, Homer was already drawn to the idea of painting outdoors, and working with watercolors was more adaptable to this technique than oil painting because of the practicality. The modern French artists called working outside as painting en plein air and ultimately made this term famous in the art world. In a similar manner to the Impressionists, Homer strived to observe the landscape under natural sunlight and capture the surroundings as he truly saw them.
In A Tropical Breeze, Nassau, Homer depicted a typical view of the tropical location. A tall coconut tree comes out from behind a stones wall, slanting to the left of the composition. The wall was painted with loose, yet detailed brushstrokes of light brown and shades of gray – featuring a detail shaped like a pyramid at the end. Dark leaves are peeking from the bottom right corner of the painting, creating a balance with the opposing tree. The top left corner holds the main figure; the large palm leaves are blowing in the wind, painted in shades of brown, ochre, and mostly dark green. The movement of the wind is so convincing that the viewer may see the tree gently sway with the powerful gust of wind. The far background simply represents water and vegetation on the banks in simple horizontal strokes of paint. Homer used loose, watery blue and white pigments in the light and breezy sky, representing a sunny day.
