The American artist Winslow Homer concluded the oil painting entitled Boys in a Pasture in the year 1874. During this period, the artist’s works were mainly bright and optimistic, portraying scenes of the peaceful rural America. This particular painting brings a sense of nostalgia and used images of children to express his hopeful view of the future. In 2010, the artist was honored by the U.S. Post Office Department that used this painting on the forty-four cent postage stamp. This wasn’t the first time Homer had his work on a U.S. postage stamp – first in 1962 with the painting entitled Breezing Up, and later in 1998 with the work entitled The Fog Warning.
During the 1870s, Homer would mainly portray scenes of the simple rural life, like children playing, women at leisure, or couples courting. Although the artist’s approach to these subjects didn’t have the intention of criticizing social structures, these works were very influenced by Realist artists. Along with mastering the craft of oil painting, Homer began dedicating himself to watercolor as well, which enabled him to experiment with a more modern approach to painting.
In Boys in a Pasture, the artist portrayed a beautifully simple scene of two young boys sitting in a field and looking out to the horizon. Homer chose a low viewpoint placing the main figures virtually centered on the canvas and a high horizon line that gives the landscape an impression of endless nature. The boy on the left wears a dark brown hat, a white shirt, and green pants. He sits with his back curved, hugging one of his legs and intertwining his fingers, while he looks away from the viewer. The boy on the right is laying down on the ground, wearing a straw hat, a gray shirt, and brown pants, and is looking to the right, beyond the limits of the canvas. Both are barefoot, a sign of a deep contact with nature.
The field is beautifully painted in different shades of brown, green and ochre. The far background shows a fence and some tall trees. The light blue sky is calm and has some small clouds. The color palette used by Homer is warm, giving the viewer the feeling of a hot day on the field, where the boys look into the distance into their future.
