Winslow Homer concluded the oil painting entitled Early Morning, After a Storm at Sea between the years 1900 and 1903. The artwork is currently located at The Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio. The artist began to frequently visit many locations in the sunny state of Florida in 1888 and continued until about 1903, mostly Key West, where he produced some of his most famous paintings like A Norther, as well as The Gulf Stream – and possibly this dramatic seascape as well.
The American artist began as a commercial illustrator and worked on the frontline of the Civil War, documenting and depicting what he saw. After the 1870s, Homer started to dedicate himself to watercolor painting and eventually stopped working as a freelance illustrator to build a career as an artist. Nature was the most predominant theme in the painter’s work, constructing a narrative involving the relationship between humankind and the environment. Homer’s vision gradually changes from a more optimistic approach to dramatic scenes where the characters fight against nature for survival. By the end of his career, the artist focused mostly on strong seascapes without the narrative involving the human figure. It was by the 1900s that Homer gained financial stability, as he had made a name and a reputation for himself as a successful artist and was able to sell his work at a high price to museums. For the past years, Homer was supporting his father who passed away during this period, leaving the artist with no one to sustain financially.
In Early Morning, After a Storm at Sea, Homer portrays a breathtaking seascape shown in a beautiful color palette. The forefront of the composition depicts dark rocks creating an angle on the canvas. Contrasting to the shades of dark brown boulders, the ocean ruffles in tonalities of light blue and ochre behind them, as well as some areas of blue-gray. A large dark wave creates a horizontal stripe across the painting in swift short brushstrokes, giving enormous movement to the scene. The far background shows the calmness of the open sea and how it beautifully reflects the soft lighting of the morning sun, peaking through the light gray clouds. The sky creates a beautiful blend of yellow, red, orange, and violet pigment – giving a warm atmosphere to the artwork.
