Fishing Boats, Key West, painted in 1903, is one of the American master Winslow Homer's later paintings, rendered in watercolour and graphite. In his early career some 40 years previously Homer, like many other artists of his time, favoured depicting seascapes and nautical scenes involving children and their various responsibilities and pursuits. In many ways this tendency was a response to the post-Civil War era of reconstruction, when many were looking to the next generation as the bearers of both innocence and hope. Many decades later the children whose figurative reproductions he captured in paintings like Breezing Up (or A Fair Wind) and A Basket of Clams are grown up and have faced the future of which they were once a hopeful symbol.
Early in his career Homer made frequent journeys from New York City out to Massachusetts and New Jersey, and the rural New York State, forming his style after a year-long visit to Paris in which he soaked up the surroundings and natural light that so influenced his contemporaries, the Impressionists. Fishing Boats, Key West is a stunning watercolour and a remarkable study of the effects of sunlight and the sultry atmosphere of the location. Homer's masterful application of his craft, his sponging of the pigments and tactile use of the paper surface forged a work of remarkable depth and compositional complexity. Creating the reproductions from life and out of doors, Homer has also deftly captured the hardworking men in a loose freehand, allowing them almost to move across the humid air of the paper. Fishing Boats, Key West is therefore a memorable depiction of the scenes and themes that the artist would return to throughout his life, seeing within these tales of seafaring life some essential essence of the American way of life.
