Winslow Homer painted Flower Garden and Bungalow, Bermuda in 1899, during one of his many trips to tropical locations. During this particular expedition, the artist produced about twenty-five watercolor paintings, focusing on bright lights, broad brush strokes, and saturated colors. During this time the painter was looser with his initial drawing and didn’t rest on on it as much, working more directly with the paint.
The artist began embracing watercolor painting in 1873, having worked a lot with oil painting and printmaking as well. His love for traveling to foreign locations made this medium a natural choice to work with while away from his studio. Homer enjoyed the landscapes and architecture of warm places like Florida, the Bahamas, and Bermuda. Despite the initial negative feedback from the critics, the painter made a name for himself with his watercolor paintings – producing works that varied from realistic and detailed portrayals to looser and more Impressionistic takes. They became very popular and sold well, helping Homer settle his finances.
In Flower Garden and Bungalow, Bermuda the painter captured the essence of a sunny and tropical landscape. In the forefront, a row of full bushes with orange, red, and yellow flowers bursts with vibrant color. The bottom right side casts a shadow and was painted in tonalities of dark brown earth. On the right side of the composition, Homer played with the juxtaposition of a variety of green tonalities, representing different layers of vegetation, including palm trees and banana trees. There is an area of light blue-green pigment with green specks almost centered on the canvas, representing a field of grass that leads to a body of water.
Behind all of the vegetation and next to the calm river, a bright yellow house with a white rooftop and chimney pops from the landscape. In front of the vibrant construction, a child wearing red clothing is running after a couple of chickens. These figures were painted simply but represent the action perfectly. The background shows a gradient blue pigment depicting the water and forest areas on the horizon in dark green. The sky is cloudy and painted in light blue and gray, as is the beginning of a storm was brewing, but the vibrant sun is still shinning.
