The American artist Winslow Homer concluded the watercolor painting entitled Girl on Swing in 1879. The painter was progressing in his career as an artist and establishing his unique style at this time. Homer began working with larger canvases, solitary figures and his concern for portraying nature as he truly saw it, grew. During this period, he enjoyed themes that occurred in rural America, like people going about their daily lives on the farm, children playing in nature, as couples courting. The artist was also beginning to work and experiment with different watercolor techniques.
The painting Girl on Swing is a simple and elegant portrayal of a young girl enjoying a sunny day in nature. Homer created an almost fantastical landscape, as he removed any sign of a horizon and englobed the figure in a green atmosphere. On the top left corner of the paper, the edge of the branch in which the swing is tied to is visible in dark shades of brown. The leaves on this corner are also darker and lead to a gradient background of leaves. The ground is highlighted with a watery yellow-green pigment, and the light source creates a dark green shadow. This shadow on the grass is the only indication of her position in space, as the ground and background blend creating an ambiguous atmosphere.
The colors Homer used on the girl make his figure pop from leaves behind her, as her dress and hat are pink with red details. She crosses her stretched out legs, making the ruffles of her dress fall, following the movement of the swing as her body falls back and holds on to the rope. The model wears light red pantyhose and beautifully drawn black boots. With simple brushstrokes, Homer gave his figure a bland expression, as is she was daydreaming.
Homer mostly worked outdoors, similar to painting en plein air – a technique made famous by the French Impressionists. Although he was already painting while observing natural sunlight before going to Europe, Homer had direct contact with the Impressionists, and this could have caused further influence upon his work. Unfortunately, little is known about his trip to Paris. Girl on Swing is a beautiful example of Homer’s experimental watercolor paintings, portraying a typical scene of the American countryside.
