Winslow Homer concluded the oil painting entitled On the Beach, Marshfield in 1872, while in Wisconsin. The artist was about thirty-six-years old at the time and was experimenting with painting techniques. He would visit the nearby country-side and seaside resorts in cities like New Jersey, and Massachusetts, as well as the mountain landscapes of New Hampshire and the Adirondacks. These trips were perfect opportunities for the artist to experiment with different watercolor painting techniques. Homer was deeply connected to nature and during this time, had an optimistic view of humankind’s relationship with their environment.
The American artist had a unique style of his own, and he painted outdoors even before knowing about painting en plein air – made famous by the Impressionists. Homer and the French group of artists were interested in observing the natural sunlight, and not just imagining it while working inside a studio. The fleeting effects of natural light on a landscape were significant for many modern artists, and after Homer had direct contact with the Impressionists, his color palette brightened. The themes chosen by Homer could be considered an influence from Realist artists who came before him. The fact that he depicted ordinary scenes from the daily life was considered itself very modern.
In the artwork On the Beach, Marshfield, the artist used a warm color palette to portray a sunny seascape. In the forefront, there is a higher area of golden sand and a path painted in a lighter shade of brown. There is some dark vegetation in a couple of regions represented with swift brush strokes. Almost centered on the canvas, a woman and child take a stroll on the beach, each holding a parasol and wearing fashionable clothing. The sand continues in a lighter shade of yellow until it reaches the shore, where Homer beautifully portrays the blue color of the water along with the dark brown of the wet sand. Some people sit and walk near the beach as well. There are many waves represented merely with off-white hints of paint, and the water gets darker as it hits the horizon. The sky is almost filled with yellow sun-bathed clouds, and only a small portion in the middle remains in light blue. Homer was able to give a warm atmosphere to this seascape, welcoming the viewer to enter and sit on the sand.
