The American artist Winslow Homer painted the watercolor entitled Rest in 1885. He concluded this work while one of his many visits to Nassau, in the Bahamas, as he was assigned by Century Magazine to produce artworks portraying the location and culture. In fact, Homer was so inspired by the tropical and exotic features of the architecture, nature, as well as the people, that he later returned. The artist enjoyed traveling to many warm places near the equator, like Cuba, Florida, and the Caribbean.
By the 1870s, Homer began dedicating himself to watercolor painting and quickly mastered the craft. As the painter enjoyed working outdoors, this medium was a lot easier to manage on improvised locations than using oil on canvas. Watercolor also allows many techniques; something Homer was fond of experimenting with – achieving realistic portrayals, as well as Impressionistic approaches. In fact, although the Impressionists made painting en plein air famous, some other artists were already working in this way before even knowing the modern group – like Homer himself. He eventually traveled to Europe and met with the Impressionists; there are almost no documented facts about what happened and what truly influenced Homer and his future work – although he came back to America with a brighter color palette than before.
In Rest, the painter depicts a colorful scene of the everyday life in Nassau where a working woman stops to take a pause. She faces the right of the canvas, holding her hip with her right hand, and props a sizeable wooden plate filled with fruit on a white wall as she rests a while. The woman was most probably carrying the plate over her head. She wears a red bandana over her hair and a simple, long-sleeve white dress. Homer used an unusual color scheme on the wall, as the left side was painted in light blue, while the right was painted in light brown and both feature shadowy textures in purple. The woman’s figure creates a brown shadow that defines the separation of colors.
Behind the wall, many plants grow in beautiful green, yellow, and red textures. Homer added a nice touch to the banana tree on the right by painting the dried out brown leaves as well. The sky is beautifully portrayed with watery blue and gray pigments, slightly resembling the textures of the wall.
