The artist Winslow Homer painted Three Boys on the Shore in 1873 using watercolor and gouache over paper. During this period, the artist worked more intimately with nature, mainly experimenting with watercolor – a medium he quickly mastered. While still maturing as an artist, Homer began to work with more solitary figures, mostly women. Throughout the decade, the artist concentrated in familiar subjects of the rural life, portraying the simple pleasures of life. Two years after concluding this painting, Homer decided to stop working as a commercial illustrator to dedicate his career to painting alone.
In the artwork Three Boys on the Shore, Homer used a paper with a rectangular, horizontal format because of the composition he chose for the work. In the forefront, there is a bolder that creates a rounded surface in which three boys lay on. To the left, a boy on his side lays almost entirely on the ground, only perching up his head on his arm. He wears a red-orange jacket, as well as blue and light brown pants. The boy in the middle is the tallest, as he is laying down but leaning his upper body on his arms. He also seems larger than the other kids of the painting, as wears a blue plaid shirt. The last kid on the right is laying on the rock too and is wearing a light gray shirt with brown pants. All three characters are wearing similar wicker sun hats. The surface of the stone is painted with great detail and attention to texture.
On the right of the composition, a light blue rowboat can be partially seen between the rocky seascape. In a single tone of blue, Homer depicted the ocean in the far background. The sky is mostly blue but creates a gradient from light to dark. The artist created a beautiful harmony for this painting as the color palette was exceptionally well thought out. Similar to the Impressionists, Homer plays with complementary combinations – like the orange, red, and ochre pigments seen on the rocks and in some areas of the sky complement the use of blue, and violet pigments. None of the figures faces are shown in this work, a characteristic of some of Homer’s work, leaving their expression and thoughts open to interpretation.
