The oil painting entitled Alexander Hamilton in the Uniform of the New York Artillery was done by the American artist Alonzo Chappel. The artwork portrays a critical period in American history - the War of Independence, also known as the Revolutionary War. To protect the city from British forces, the New York Provincial Congress created a Company of Artillery in 1776, in which Alexander Hamilton was commissioned as an officer. This historic piece stands out as it shows the officer out in the fields, instead of the traditional posed portrait painting.
Hamilton was a standout commander of his unit and caught the attention of officers of the Continental Army, many of them which offered him high-ranking positions. He would eventually refuse all of them to fill the position of Chief of Staff to none other than General George Washington, the commander-in-chief. In this painting, Chappel captured an introspective moment in which Hamilton is leaning with his arms crossed. Although he seems unguarded, his posture is still much as a leader and his uniform confirmes it.
The officer wears white pants with long black boots that reach his knees. His white vest is covered with a navy blue military jacket with red details and golden fringe on the shoulders. He wears a large embellished hat with a red feather, and a long and thin sword hangs from his waist. Chappel depicts Hamilton’s side view, as he looks to the left of the canvas, giving an idea that he observes something outside of what can be seen in the painting.
The color pallet is very bland, with most of the ground and background painted with tonalities of brown and ochre. To the right, in the forefront, there are some materials to work with plantation, while to the left and behind Hamilton, some machinery can be seen. The sky is mostly gray with clouds but shows some blue and white areas as well. A single dark flag stands out in the background waving in the air. The end of the flagpole is detailed with an ornamental arrow. There are four mounts of what seem to be stacks of hay with perfectly spaced wooden sticks showing on top of each.
