Pissarro painted this piece around the year of 1867. It shows the center of a small village in the countryside of France. Pissarro started producing these landscapes around this time when he would often leave Paris to paint the countryside. These early masterpieces are immensely significant to his development as one of the most influential artists of the Impressionist movement. These are his first experiments with natural light, a skill that he would further develop later in London.
He does a very subtle yet incredibly detailed work with the sunlight and shadow. We can see a few buildings on the foot of a hill. The left-hand side, where the road ends, is crammed with houses. We can see some yellow and ochre walls with pointy triangular roofs. Orange and yellow tones, along with these shapes, represent the French architecture marvelously. In the foreground, a small dirt road that leads into the hill and goes up across the right-hand side of the canvas can be seen. The buildings placed up the hill have very bright white walls and the same triangular rooftops. It’s possible to see some smoke coming out of some chimneys.
On the back of this village, there is another bright green hill. All over the town, there are bushes and trees, showing the luscious nature of the region. There is a very intimate connection with the representation of countryside interiors of France that are present in several paintings of these series.
Behind all that, there is a bright blue sky and silky white clouds. Thick, yet feathery strokes compose this painting along with a vibrant and rich palette. The colors used in the air and grass show us a landscape painted in the middle of the day, as the sun is shining bright up in the sky.
There are some characters in the painting; two little boys sitting on the grass and two women, possibly their nannies or maids, are minding them from the roadside. Despite the tiny size of the characters compared to the whole of the picture, it’s possible to tell apart details like their long dresses and white headgear.
There is little contrast in this painting, but we can see an extensive work on the shadows cast by the trees and the buildings.
