Edgar Degas is known for his vast iconic collection of pieces about ballerinas and dancers. He was probably the most important artist to represent the subtlety of the classical ballet. This obsession, according to sources, would come from the fact that these representations would match his taste for the classical beauty with his innovative Impressionist style.
In this example of his important work, two dancers are the main subject while four others are part of the scene. One of the main characters of this piece is a black haired girl with a chubby face and a vibrant red lipstick. Behind her, there is a brown haired girl. It’s possible to see her hair and dress, but her face is covered by the black hair from the girl in front of her. Unlike the girl in the front, she doesn’t have details on her dress. They are striking a delicate pose, the black-haired dancer in the front has few red flowers on her hair and her pearl white dress matches her lipstick. She has an interesting black choker on her neck that contrasts with the subtlety of the rest of her outfit.
It is possible to observe how both skirts are flowy and puffy. Nice brushstrokes create a cloudy aspect of the tulle fabric. They both have white skin and wear light pastel pink stockings.
They are on a smooth floor, but behind them, there is a sort of a flower bush that gives the whole scene the aspect that they are en-plein-air (outdoors). On the background there are two other dancers chatting, one of them is almost behind the bushes. The corsage of the dancer on the right is shaded in a darker tone of blue, and there is a beautiful light outlining her legs.
Two dancers are on the foreground, almost out of the panel. They look and appreciate the pose of the two little girls that are at the center of the image. One of them, with a darker hair and a pink toned skin, points out at them as if she was about to mimic their poses.
The other girl that is in front of the whole picture, simply observes. She is either wearing a fur coat or has her hair down over her shoulders. There is also the textured detail on the skirt of these two girls in front of this picture.
