Two Dancers Entering the Stage is a pastel drawing produced between the years of 1877 and 1878 and might be one of the most astonishing pieces produced by Degas during his ballet period. During this phase, he was more and more influenced by the Impressionists, but this pastel shows a lot of the academic influence, for its compromise with Realism and the color palette chosen to depict light and shadow. While Impressionist pieces illustrate light and shadow with complementary colors, this composition shows a more traditional choice for the matter.
The complexity of this drawing goes beyond the palette, subject matter, or layout. Most pieces of this period have a more abstract line work, yet this piece shows a lot of commitment with lines and details to show particulars of the facial expressions of the subjects, as well as details on their costumes.
Two Dancers Entering the Stage has a varied color palette, and the volume and shadow are so deeply detailed that the ballerinas gain unprecedented volume and life. They are like two dolls seen through stained glass.
The artwork portrays two ballerinas on the foreground. They are wearing puffy white dresses, and the tutu is perfectly characterized by the pastel work. On the dresses and corsets of the two dancers, colored flowers are sprinkled. On the first ballerina, there are bright red flowers, and there are yellow flowers on the ballerina on the back. Both of them wear pastel pink stockings and ballet shoes tied to their ankles, a detail rarely seen on his other pieces. They both have pale skin, shaded in tones of orange and brown. To the right, it’s possible to observe the arm and dress of a third ballerina.
Behind them, a ballet instructor looms with his black top hat and suit. The man is standing in a middle ground, to the back of the stage, and fewer details are visible on this subject. This increases the idea of depth and volume.
They dance over a grey floor and behind them, a colorful scenery is painted. The green and orange pigments over the back of the stage are roughly painted in abstract shapes but provide us with the idea of a forest of tropical vegetation.
The ballerinas and the instructor are on the part of the stage known as the traveler, that is the side entrances of the stage that opens passage so the dancers can get in and out of the area with a smooth transition between the acts.
