Modern Comanche

In any discussion about Western or Cowboy Art, two subjects are hardly left out. First, the style’s significant similarities to Orientalism, as if it was the American response to European artistic xenophobia. While the Europeans were painting the distant Moorish and Arabian lands of the alien Muslim, Americans were painting their inhuman foe, the Native American people that were in the process of being removed from their lands to give way to Anglo-Saxon progress. Secondly, it is very difficult to talk about Western Art without mentioning one of its greatest names, the New Yorker Frederick Sackrider Remington, who, although he lived most of his life on the East Coast, would often venture West, driven first by entrepreneurial ambitions, then by artistic interests.

While Remington’s views make his legacy a complex one, it is impossible to ignore that there was much value in his art, even when it might have reflected those views. If it was said that Remington painted what he knew and knew what he painted, we must remember that his view of the subject matter was that of a rancher trying to make some easy money in the westward expansion of the United States of America. As such, the only greater danger than nature itself were the Natives that already inhabited the lands where the artist and his peers expected to make their fortune. This would lead to a less than sympathetic depiction of those people.

As such, while this 1890 oil on canvas seems, at a glance, to be portraying the Native American in a positive light, as a brave and stalwart denizen of the plains, a closer look at his depiction and context are necessary to understand the underlying commentary. Firstly, it’s essential to notice how Remington employs his ingenious use of color and lighting to shape the rider’s facial features, making him look sunburnt and haggard even though he not suffering any apparent misfortune. That depiction of Native Americans as a gaunt people was common in Remington’s time and served to normalize the Native American as a naturally suffering people. Second, note that the man wears European clothing, which, coupled with the title, gives the idea that a civilized Native American is one that has been absorbed and transformed by white American culture and customs.

Purchasing a frame (USA only)

You may choose to purchase your painting framed, in which case, it will arrive "ready to hang". We offer more than 20 beautiful models, all hand finished and expertly assembled by our experienced framers.

Note that for safety reasons we can only frame up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached the framing option is automatically disabled.

Purchasing a Stretching Service (USA only)

If you are planning to frame your painting yourself, use an existing frame, or frame it locally, you may choose to order your painting with a stretching service, meaning that it will arrive mounted on wooden bars.

Purchasing a Gallery Wrap (USA only)

If you're considering not framing your painting at all, you may opt for a Gallery Wrap. The term Gallery Wrap refers to the way the canvas is stretched, which is by wrapping it around thick stretcher bars, about 1.5 inch thick, with the canvas being secured to the back rather than the sides of those bars.
