Bathing At Asnieres is a fantastic 201 cm × 301 cm (79 in × 118 in) oil on canvas by Georges Seurat. Bathing At Asnieres now belongs to the National Gallery of London and was painted in 1884. When Georges Seurat finished Bathing At Asnieres, he was only 24 years old. Seurat submitted the work to the Paris Salon, but the jury rejected it. The picture depicts a spot close to the banks of the River Seine, just four miles away from Paris’ downtown. The masterpiece has a similar dimension as A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte and is often understood as a dialogue with this painting.
Bathing At Asnieres was painted on a monumental-sized horizontal canvas. After being rejected by the Salon, Seurat grouped with other dissenting artists and founded the Groupe des Artistes Indépendants. It was in an exhibition organized by the group that Bathing At Asnieres was first exhibited. Initially, Bathing At Asnieres was largely ignored at this exhibition, being shown in the beer hall of the building, a rather non-prestigious placement. Then, in 1886, the work was taken by the now-famous art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel to a show in New York City.
Around fourteen previous artworks by Seurat are now understood as preparatory studies for Bathing At Asnieres. Being a student of the École des Beaux-Arts, Seurat’s work is better understood by being influenced by fresco painters such as Piero Della Francesca and the Symbolist Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. Bathing At Asnieres is the first of the monumental canvases by Georges Seurat and one that already exhibits his mature painting style, characterized by the juxtaposition of tiny dots of pure color.
The artwork shows a group of seven bathers at the banks of the River Seine. Contrasting to the bourgeoisie figures depicted in A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, the characters in this work are all working-class people. The horizon line is placed highly, allowing the grass and the water to be primarily depicted. The painting has a strong flatness, and its color harmony is exceptionally pleasing, allowing the viewer’s gaze to roam freely through the different figures. The whole palette is light and soft, and the subtle modulations allow for a unique aesthetic experience.
