Canaletto was born in Venice, but early in life, he moved to Rome. There, he worked alongside his father as an apprentice, and his job was to paint theater scenes. This job might have awakened Canaletto to the world of fine arts. But it was inspired by the artist and architect Giovanni Paolo Pannini that he first got into painting daily scenes of the people around the city.
He returned from Rome to Venice in 1719 and then studied tutored by Carlevaris. It didn’t take long till Canaletto surpassed his master and produced astonishing pieces that marker his time and turned him forever known.
In his early career, he started studying and painting from nature. This habit means most of his pieces from this time were mere reproductions of the landscapes and spaces around him. Slowly, he started to develop his pieces even further and finish them in the studio. Thus, his later works merge reality and imagination and are much more complex and profound.
This painting shows a festival that celebrated a victory from the port of Venice over pirates around 998. The exact details of this relevant event are unclear to this date, but the city would have a big yearly festivity on Ascension Day. Small gondolas would accompany the large vessel called the Bucintoro back from the Adriatic sea to the quays of Venice.
Canaletto portrayed this celebration in more than one painting, and most of them are rather large and impressive. A very similar piece is Return of the Bucintoro on Ascension Day, which portrays the entrance of the Venice port from the Adriatic sea roughly from the same perspective and view than this piece here. Even the corresponding buildings are visible. However, in this version, fewer boats are surrounding the area, which brings even more evidence to the main vessel, called Bucintoro.
The opened perspective shows the first row of buildings on the port and a little bit of the city skyline. The Bucintoro stands out for its magnificent size and colors. The sky is very bright and blue, and the color palette is all smooth and consonant.
This painting represents this important festivity and creates a beautiful setting of Venice back in the day. Canaletto showed great appreciation for representing this gorgeous city, and this view seemed to be one of his favorites.
