The Art Nouveau style portrait of Adele Bloch Bauer is one of Gustav Klimt’s most famous paintings. It’s often called The Woman in Gold or The Lady in Gold. It’s the peak of the artist’s Golden Era and probably the piece that better represents both the phase and the artist. The painting is nearly completely covered in gold and silver leaf.
The Nazis stole this painting in 1941, but fortunately, it was not destroyed along with several other pieces, probably due to its indisputable value.
Unquestionably, the most eye-catching characteristic of this piece is the golden texture that covers a large part of the painting.
The figure is painted just off center and stands out in the middle of all the gold pieces with a pale, aristocratic mien and thick black hair.
The muse wears an emblematic silver choker. Her dress has thin straps on the shoulders leaving her pale bust naked. The embroidered straps hold the full dress that falls over the painting filled with patterns and shapes, represented in gold and blue. The central part of the dress displays a path filled with triangles and eye shaped pieces, portrayed in gold, and white with blue and brown details. The bust is filled with triangular brown and white shapes and no gold leaf applied to it. Her arms are embellished with thick silver and gold bracelets that merge into the beautiful sleeve of the dress.
The shape of the dress is formed by golden veils that run down all the way to the edge of the canvas. These veils are stamped with shapes covered in gold leaf. These squared stamps are illustrated with circles, spirals, half-circles and other shapes.
The background of the painting is covered in a smooth golden texture, but the section behind the muse is filled with a collage of patterns that get brighter and more ornamented as they approach foreground, framing her delicate face and chest. Around her waist, there is a pattern formed by spirals that resemble the branches of the trees painted on the artworks that are part of the Stoclet’s Palace Frieze.
