The painting entitled Garden Path with Chickens was done in 1916 by the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt. By the Second World War, the artwork was taken from the Erich Lederer Collection and relocated to the Schloss Immendorfer in Austria with the intention of preserving the painting. But in 1945, the location, along with all of the artwork inside was burnt, and everything was lost. Luckily, the image of Garden Path with Chickens is still preserved, even though the original painting was destroyed.
Klimt concluded this landscape by the end of his career, as he passed away only two years later – after having a stroke and further complications with his health. The artwork was done during one of his summer visits to Weissenbach on Lake Attersee and was kept from the public for about fifty years. The vibrant colors and play on perspective and shapes make this an unusual landscape. Klimt depicts a narrow dirt path leading the viewer to a small house in the background. The road gives an impression of golden sand, painted mostly with yellow and ochre pigments, but also with hints of purple, brown, and blue. Two black chickens stand along the path, contrasting with the brightly colored ground.
Along the sides of the small road, an abundant amount of wildflowers grow, creating four columns of towering flowers. There are large yellow, green, and blue leaves, along with multicolored flowers, in white, red, orange, purple, blue, as well as in many shapes and sizes. The way Klimt shaped the vegetation rising in shapes of cones made the humble pathway a monumental work of nature. The plants feature dark think outlines, a characteristic seen in many of his paintings. The background shows an endless amount of green leaves with yellow highlights. The path leads to a small house, that is also covered in climbing vegetation, causing it to camouflage into the atmosphere. The house can also be interpreted as an entranceway into a property since there is a fence partially visible behind what seems to be a table and a stool. The background is nearly a complementary detail to the overwhelming aesthetic value of the nature represented by Klimt in these radiant blossoms. Klimt was able to portray a natural surrounding in a modern way, placing the audience directly in the middle of the fantastical atmosphere.
