In Bed: The Kiss is a beautiful 70 x 54 cm (27.5 x 21.2 in.) oil on canvas by the famous painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The original work was painted in 1892 and was auctioned by Christie’s for US$12,485,000. Toulouse-Lautrec is today worldwide renowned for his graphic and pictorial work for cabarets and brothels. Toulouse-Lautrec had an aristocratic background, but his peers often ostracized him because of his specific health conditions. Lautrec felt a strong connection to sex workers for their social position. In a series of works that depict women in bed, he portrayed moments of intimacy without a condescending or moralizing perspective, but a tender one. In Bed: The Kiss is one of Lautrec’s best-known masterpieces, showing two people kissing while lying in bed.
In Bed: The Kiss was painted on an almost square-shaped canvas. Its style is very graphic, a remarkable feat of Lautrec’s painting, who constantly worked as a draughtsman and lithograph. Lautrec’s handling of paint in these pictures is very sketch-like and diluted. Cross-hatching and parallel lines are used to create the color areas, the flesh is made of line-like brushstrokes, and there are outlines to emphasize the figures. This intense use of turpentine, though, gives an ethereal characteristic to the bodies.
The warm pink and light yellow of the figures’ flesh blends with the blue-colored sheets. Many spots of the canvas can be seen under the greens and blues that constitute the bed. The whole visual effect is very similar to pastels. The light blue of the sheets is also used in the shadows and outlines of the figures, almost merging them with the bed. The two women are left to the center. Both of them have their eyes closed, and we can only see their faces partially. They are embracing each other passionately.
This motif was of great interest to Toulouse-Lautrec during the 1890s. Other examples are In Bed, work with the same title as this one. These artworks are marked by close and affectionate observation of the daily life of sex workers, showing in the routinary contexts. By choosing to portray them in these scenes, usually as a couple or two friends, Toulouse-Lautrec brings a more humanized and realistic depiction.
