Hide And Seek is a beautiful 60.3 x 75.9 cm oil painting by James Jacques Joseph Tissot and is dated from circa 1880-1882. James Tissot was a late 19th-century painter, hailed for his stunning images of the Victorian Era. Born in Nantes, France, into a clothing merchant family, Tissot decided to be a painter when he was 17 years old. Under the classes of Louis Lamothe, his talent flourished, with the artist achieving great technical skills and an Academic background. Moving to London in 1870, he worked with magazines and was cunningly fast in dealing with his work. Hide and Seek is one of Tissot’s interiors, bringing to the contemporary audience a look into the daily life of the bourgeois family of the 19th-century.
Hide And Seek was painted on a rectangular canvas, emphasizing its height. The point of view that Tissot chose gives a more intimate aspect to the picture. The interior is full of patterns and shadows, giving the viewer many details to observe. Like many Modernists, Tissot was fascinated by the ukiyo-e prints, and Japonisme influenced him like many other of his contemporaries. The choice for the abundance of patterns can be understood as part of this Japanese influence.
At the bottom of the composition, there is a dark round object with golden patterns and a small toy ball to its right. To the left, there is a beautiful red patterned carpet with a beautiful pattern of white flowers and blue branches. On it, a petite blond child in a white dress is crawling while searching for the other children. Behind here are heavy dark leather armchairs decorated with different animal pelts, including tiger skin.
An unseen light source illuminates the little girl and the carpet, showing a beautiful intense blue. The room is filled with rich decor, like vases, fancy chairs, and golden picture frames. In the background, large windows fill the room with natural lighting, and colorful plants can be seen outside. A woman in a navy blue dress is leaning in her chair and reading what seems to be a newspaper while the kids play. There is a shadowy area to the left, where three other children can be seen peeking from their hiding place, while the small girl searching is clueless of their position. The picture is full of details that keep intriguing the viewer who wishes to search for them.
