Jan Matejko's 1878 epic painting, Battle of Grunwald, is without a doubt one of the most recognizable works of Polish art and a symbol of national fascination and pride. The historical battle was one of the most important in the history of Medieval Europe and is regarded as a seminal moment in the history of a number of European nations. The source of countless romantic myths and used by widely divergent ideologies as propaganda, the battle gradually became a standard symbol of a nation's struggle against marauding invaders. The seismic importance of the battle, a massive conflagration by any standards, redrew the political map of Europe.
Matejko's painting is epic in size, scale, and scope. Bustling with action, meaning, symbolism, and conflict, the work was recently the subject of the first 3D stereoscopic reproduction, responding to the difficulty in both photographing and lighting this enormous scene. Known to many through reproductions of miniaturized elements, Battle of Grunwald is a complex and busy work of history painting. Such is the hypnotic charge of this nationalist canvas that the artist's native city Krakow declared him King of the Arts, accompanied by a golden scepter.
Preparing for the epic work with countless preparatory studies, Matejko amassed a vast collection of medieval objects; armor, weapons, and battle standards, and even visited the site of the battle. Choosing to bring a great number of important elements, historical figures, and events from the actual battle into the spatial confines of the frame, Matejko's work is blatant didacticism and myth-making, casting off traditional techniques of depth, composition, and balance. In spite of the busy-ness of the image, this epic painting is a nation-shaping myth in the paint – an image to share, not to possess.
In this painting, Matejko portrays many Polish knights holding swords and banners, as well as German knights in an intense battle, represented with explosions of color. The figure that stands out to the viewer the most is known as Vytautas the Great, who wears a red velvet coat and hat, and rides a black horse. In the far background, a bunch of violet, pink, and orange clouds rise in the sky, revealing the Holy figure of Saint Stanislaus with a luminescent aura around his head, protecting the Polish at war.
