John Singer Sargent painted the group portrait entitled The Wyndham Sisters in 1899 and was exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1900. The Prince of Wales referred to this artwork as “The Three Graces, ” and it was very well received by the critics as well. The three women depicted by Sargent in this work were all daughters of Percy Wyndham, an honorable army man. From left to right there is Mrs. Adeane, Mrs. Tennant, and Lady Elcho in the back.
This artwork was painted at Belgrave Square, in the families residence. The environment was well thought out, as a large painting of their mother, Madeline, painted by George Frederick Watt, hangs in the background. The representation of the full-size portrait inside Sargent’s painting only solidifies the family ties, and also shows his respect for artists that came before him. In fact, this artwork is very reminiscent of classic masters of the past, like the Baroque artists, but has a very modern touch. The drastic contrast of the dark background with the light and vibrant women in the forefront is very reminiscent of the portraits painted by Diego Velazquez, which inspired Sargent.
Sargent even traveled around Europe to study painters he admired from the past with more depth, but it was only after he studied with Carolus Duran in Paris that he learned to deconstruct what he learned. Slowly delving into the world of modern painting, the American artist learned how to trust his instincts more and created a unique style of his own. In The Wyndham Sisters, it is possible to see how the painter blends a realistic representation with looser and more visible brushstrokes.
All three women wear pearly-white and fancy dresses, defining their important status in society. Mrs. Adeane and Mrs. Tennant – the youngest of the three – sit on a couch with the same tonality of their clothing. There is a bouquet of white flowers on the bottom right corner of the canvas, and its dark green leaves counterbalance with a large green cushion on the couch. The back wall is another tonality of green and shows some decorative pieces and has some ornamental paintings hanging. This captivating group portrait is one of Sargent’s greatest masterpieces, as he beautifully and gracefully captured the essence of his sitters.
