This oil painting by artist Joseph Mallord William Turner entitled Landscape with a River and a Bay in the Background was rendered between the years of 1835 and 1840. Turner was part of the Romanticism period and was born and lived his whole life in England.
This canvas is a perfect sample of the unique style that Turner developed during his life as a landscape artist. The title helps to understand what we are looking at, for in this phase in his life the artist rendered reality in a way that seemed to be dissolving. It is possible that without the title this canvas could be mistaken for an abstract work, even though abstraction did not exist in the arts until the 1940s.
This landscape painting has a very balanced earth-sky proportion. Turner divided the canvas almost in half. The bottom shows shades of browns and beiges, whereas the sky is virtually all white, except for the upper right corner where the artist added an area of blue sky. The only part of this rendering which is unambiguous is that corner with blue hues, for the river and bay were only insinuated by tones of colors.
The foreground shows some dark tones which balance the massive white area of the sky. Turner shows, in this painting, the mastery with which he constructs his compositions, for all elements are perfectly balanced.
The way he depicted the sceneries is a preview of what would be developed by the artists of the Impressionism, the art movement that would follow Romanticism. The Impressionists and their main characteristic was this way of painting that did not focus on being an illusion of reality, but instead, they wanted to capture the effect of the natural light.
They did this in paintings that from a close look seemed to be meaningless brushstrokes, but when observed from a distance their unity revealed landscapes with incredibly realistic colors. To achieve this, the Impressionists got out of their studios and started painting almost exclusively en plein air, that is, outdoors.
Turner was one of the few of his time to paint outside and, maybe as a reflection of the artist’s appreciation for the outdoors, he started depicting not only what he saw in the landscapes, but also the sensations he got from it. Consequently, he is considered a link between the Romanticism and Impressionism.
