Joseph Mallord William Turner's 1823 painting Shields, on the River Tyne is a Romantic and proto-Impressionist reproduction of a view of the snaking river in Newcastle that was once the home of the shipbuilding industry. More than a painter of light and wild nature, Turner was also an unparalleled documenter of the Industrial Revolution as it swept through Britain ushering in monumental changes that would have global effects. In Shields, on the River Tyne a mysterious atmosphere is creating by the looming midnight across the shipyard. In the foreground a busy group of Keelmen, men who carried the coal from the banks to waiting collier ships, transfer huge quantities of coal from the barges that drift down the River Tyne from the bustling city of Newcastle. Part of a small series of studies Turner undertook of the Shields section of the River Tyne, the artist also attempted to capture the unique mood of the place in mezzotint — a technique that varied slightly from etching and engraving.
The series that Shields, on the River Tyne was a part of also featured another visual reproduction of an eye-catching landmark that lit the surrounding area, the Low Light Tower, which still stands on the Fish Quay at North Shields, on the north bank of the River Tyne east of Newcastle. Yet in Shields, on the River Tyne it is the moon that is the dominant source of light, illuminating the industrialized world with a natural glow. This remarkable canvas shows off Turner's skill as a young artist, honing a style that would remain entirely his own and almost unique until the emergence of the Impressionists some fifty years later. Shields, on the River Tyne is the work of what could be described as the court painter of Industrial England, all the while capturing the battle for supremacy between nature and the mechanized world.
