The oil painting entitled The Angel Standing in the Sun rendered by the English artist Joseph Mallord William Turner was painted in 1846, and it shows an apparition of Archangel Michael on the day of the final Judgement.
The angel holds a flaming sword high while the people beneath him seem to be desperate. A more careful analysis of this rendering shows that these people are characters from the Old Testament from the Bible. On the left, there are Adam and Eve, both crying over the body of Abel. On the right, Judith holds the head of Holofernes. Other scenes of despair and tragedy are also depicted.
On the top left corner of the painting, Turner depicted a group of birds in a simplified style. One bird can be seen on the upper right side of the picture too. The color palette in this painting are shades of browns and a bright sky. The birds and the bottom right corner were painted with darker shades of brown, which helps to create a pessimistic atmosphere in the picture.
This is a work of the mature phase of the artist. Turner had already embraced his style which distanced from the Romantic realism. The technique used here was the one he developed in his watercolors and which he adapted to the oil paintings. This allowed him to layer the transparent colors he got by adding more binding material than usual to the pigments. Even though the results were astonishing, Turner received many negative reviews, because of the innovative aspect of his creations.
In the first exhibition of this work, Turner dedicated it to those who criticized his productions. It might be that all the pessimist conveyed by this canvas was a reflection of the artist’s insecurities as to the critiques he frequently got.
Though he got a considerable number of critiques, Turner also got recognition for his talented work. His landscapes were celebrated by art critics, and he even got a royal commission once for a marine painting depicting the battle of Trafalgar. His personal life, however, was not easy. He never married and had almost no family by the time of his death. The consequent pessimism can be noticed in his canvases in the choice of colors and tones. It is common for Turner to place extremely dark tones in the foreground of his compositions, which might indicate a central role of the pessimism in his canvases.

Purchasing a Stretching Service
If you are planning to frame your painting yourself,
use an existing frame, or frame it locally, you may choose to order your painting with a stretching service,
meaning that it will arrive mounted on wooden bars.
Purchasing a Gallery Wrap
If you're considering not framing your painting at all, you may opt for a Gallery Wrap. The term Gallery Wrap refers to the way the canvas is stretched, which is by wrapping it around thick stretcher bars, about 1.5 inch thick, with the canvas being secured to the back rather than the sides of those bars.
