This impressive painting, created around the year 1890, shows the landscape of a small forest. Cézanne places the viewer inside the woods, and not looking from a distance as it would be more common at this time. The frame of the tree trunks, and the lighting on the ground shows how the forest is painted from the inside perspective. The artist was already 51 years old when he produced this masterwork, and it’s possible to see in it his development as an Impressionist. Cézanne had painted landscapes since his early career. The master Camille Pissarro mentored the entire base of his artistic talent. At this point, Cézanne had moved and traveled to many places to study the local fauna to specialize his artwork.
At some point, Camille and Cézanne stopped having a master-pupil relationship, and Cézanne started exploring new ways of creating landscape art. He started building a connection between simple geometric forms like the sphere, the cube, and the cylinder with the complex shapes of nature.
In this work, we can see the development of this theory. The tree shapes are simplified, to the point that they are almost abstract. The leaves are perfect dabs of color shaped by the format of the brushstrokes. The grass is a mass of diagonal brushstrokes that merges with the horizon and the background colors.
We have the perfect idea of what kind of environment the artist is trying to communicate. The artist creates a beautiful pallet as he uses the contrasting yellow of the sky with dark blue and lilac tonalities, representing the sunbeams passing through the leaves and hitting the ground. The correlation between the dark green and the vibrant color of the grass in the sun shows us how alive and luscious this small forest is.
The tree trunks are dark and curvy, telling us that these trees are old and have been there for long. Cézanne was a bridge between the late XIX century artists and the early XX century. This artwork is a beautiful example of the creative energy that led this painter to be one of the most influential of art history.
