While on his first Tahitian period, Paul Gauguin held a strong preference for exploring the people and customs of the islands, resulting in some symbolic portraits and scenes loaded with sentiment for the tropical paradise he had found and its people. Conversely, on his second Tahitian period, after having spent some years in Paris settling his financial issues, he turned his focus towards the Tahitian nature, reportedly taking long explorative walks to the countryside, delving into the mountains and forests that surrounded him in the search for inspiration.
In this 1898 oil on canvas, Gauguin gave body to that inspiration, although the scene he portrays is not real, but imagined. Now in possession of the Musée d’Orsay, the piece depicts an almost preternaturally placid scene, which presents almost like a vision experienced by the artist in his long hikes. The dreamlike the aspect of the painting is reinforced by not only its unreal shift in perspective, but also by its extremely organic composition, which flows up and down the canvas in the curves of the trees, the river, and even of the horses’ backs.
In a way, Gauguin’s landscape is dreamlike. The perspective seems to come from two different points of observation, one for the horses and riders and another for the landscape that surrounds them. But that choice is not without references, as a very similar perspective shift is quite common in the Japanese prints that would have been part of the artist’s imaginary museum, a collection of photos and prints that he carried with him as an inspiration bank, and from which he took plenty of ideas for composition, model poses and scenario elements.
Such multi-cultural cues were often intertwined by Gauguin with aspects of Tahitian culture, which has led many to believe that the horse in this iconic scene was supposed to represent some aspect of death and divinity, as the color white represented for the Tahitian cultures death and the other world, as well as the worship of the gods. To further explore the artist’s color choices, it is notable that the palette of bold greens chosen for the scene is present not only in the vegetation but also reflected off every other element, from the flowing river to the horses’ backs creating an even starker contrast with the orange horses and their coppery colored riders.
