Rembrandt’s striking seascape, the only one he ever painted, remains missing after it was stolen in 1990 as part of the biggest art heist in US history. Poignantly, and emblematic of this great loss, the museum that formerly housed the work displays its empty frame in the original locations. Christ In The Storm On The Sea Of Galilee, dated 1633, coincided with a burgeoning period in the young artists life, after he had moved to Amsterdam and was enjoying a fruitful burst of commissions from various patrons. This imagined reproduction of a Biblical scene features a vast and diverse array of emotional lunges and gravitational pulls, as the fragile ship is rocked by the turbulent sea. The only two figures that seem at all at ease are Jesus and a mysterious figure looking towards the viewer.
The bright coloring and concise brushwork are characteristic of Rembrandt’s early period. The fragile spirituality on the faces of the twelve disciplines, many of them fraught with panic, one even vomiting over the side of the ship, is testament to the humanistic eye of the young painter. The furious tumults of nature is rendered as a metaphoric device to depict the lives of the disciples and the Christ, given forceful dramatic impact by Rembrandt’s careful staging of this Biblical scene as a historic image, and one unfolding as a pictorial narrative.
Remarkably, the only other calm face on the craft, alongside the twelve apostles and Jesus, bears a striking resemblance to Rembrandt, leading many to believe that the artist depicted himself as a crewmember, gazing out knowingly at the viewer and contemplating his own part in this dramatic reproduction of the Biblical tale.
