Little Girl with Flowers, also known as Innocence, Portrait of Nancy Graham, is a beautiful portrait painting by the Scottish 19th-century painter Sir Henry Raeburn. Unfortunately, the original artwork’s location and date remain unknown. Sir Henry Raeburn was an artist with unusual origins: he was part of a low-income family, and when he was only a child his father passed away. As an orphan, Raeburn had the backing of his older brother William, who secured his education in a hospital. As a goldsmith apprentice, a job close to the art world, Raeburn began to make miniature portraits and quickly excelled at the genre. Little Girl with Flowers is an incredible example of his unique approach.
Henry Raeburn developed a specific manner that made his way of depicting people incredibly captivating and complex. During his voyage to Italy with his wife for two years, Henry Raeburn made a close study of the Old Masters. While in great touch with them, he had a direct Realist approach that privileged the observation time of his subject instead of composing through memory. His artworks contain a profound vivacity, rendered through his virtuoso brushwork and intense coloring.
Little Girl With Flowers presents its audience with a sweet young girl in white. She is sitting centralized on the composition, just slightly to the right. The girl has short light brown hair, which is combed to the right, and she seems to be observing something outside the canvas’ limits. The girl wears a white dress, and there is a bundle of flowers on her lap: white, pink, and red ones. Her hands are joined together on her lap, holding the flowers. She wears a pair of bright red shoes that stands out in the overall shades of green and brown.
The redness of her shoes contrasts with the mostly green background. Raeburn’s rendering of the environment is somewhat abstract, something found in a considerable number of his portraits. Yet, the artist gives the audience some indications: it seems to be in the gardens or a forest. On her left side, there is a broad, light brown area. The artist included some brush strokes at the edge of the canvas, resembling branches. The girl sits on a slight slope. On top of her, the vegetation becomes progressively darker, giving weight to the painting’s upper area.
