The Calmady Children is a wonderful oil on canvas by the British painter Sir Thomas Lawrence. The original painting was made in 1823 and now belongs to The Metropolitan Museum Collection. Sir Thomas Lawrence was one of the leading painters of 18th-century Britain. He was elected as the 4th director of the Royal Academy of Arts, and his work is known for his portraits of known Regency characters. Lawrence had a humble background and moved to London when he was 18 years old, receiving some career and artistic instructions from the famous Sir Joshua Reynolds. A self-taught artist, Lawrence was immensely praised for his virtuoso skills of oil painting and depiction of people.
The picture depicts Laure Anne and Emily Calmady, two joyful sisters. The painting was exhibited in the same year that it was made in the Royal Academy, and Sir Thomas Lawrence was highly fond of it, considering The Calmady Children as one of his best works. The Calmady Children perfectly exemplifies the importance that portraiture had in 18th-century Britain, and especially the gracefulness that that time reserved towards children.
The Calmady Children depicts the sisters upfront. The one on the left, the smaller one, is smiling. Their complexion is pale white, and both of their lips are painted red. The younger sister has blushing cheeks, short blonde hair, and gray eyes and looks directly at the viewer. Her arm extends behind her sister’s head, and it appears on the top of her head with an open hand. The girl is wearing a white dress with delicate blue details.
Her sister, who is on her right side, is looking at her, so the audience can only see her profile. She has curly dark brown hair, which is a little bit longer than her sister’s. She is wearing a golden necklace, and her garments are similar to the smaller girl ones. She has a blue band around her waist and also wears a white dress. There’s an oval shape around them, a painted frame that Lawrence made, and beyond them, there is a kind of abstract landscape with a vibrant blue sky.
