Thatched Cottages at Cordeville, Auvers-sur-Oise is an impressive 73 x 92 cm (28.7 x 36.2 in) oil painting by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh and belongs to the Musée d’Orsay collection. The image shows some of the cottages in Auvers-sur-Oise. In 1890, the painter’s last year of life, he was treated in a small village near Paris. As it was usual for his practice, he painted portraits of the citizens of Auvers and its surroundings. His work from this period is fierce, radical; his landscapes depicting houses are usually painted with curvilinear brushstrokes, accentuating a sensation of movement and energy.
Thatched Cottages at Cordeville, Auvers-sur-Oise has an almost square shape and its predominant color is green. The artist painted it with thick impasto, a trait present in nearly all of his artworks from this year. The effect is a very textural and dynamic one. The house’s ceiling displays strong curves and a darker green, merging with the bushes and trees in the background. Van Gogh varies from small to medium-thin brushstrokes, employing darker lines for his contours and a variation of green and white to create the cottages and grass color harmony.
The bushes to the left are very twisted, giving an impression of strong wind. At the right, there is a hill with a tree painted with a lighter green, being a more ordered and simple point of the composition, where the eye can rest. Some parts of other cottages can also be noticed. The sky is also heavily stylized, done with white and pure blue and gestural brushstrokes in all directions.
In the last two years, Van Gogh’s work had already witnessed an intense shift. He had moved to the now famed Arles in 1888 after spending some time in Paris with his brother Theo. His contact with the French capital was indeed a pivotal point to his intensification of colors and varied and bold use of the brushstroke. However, it was in Arles that he had found his unique manner.
His palette became brighter and more intense. The brushstrokes, energetic, creating complex and detailed visual patterns; the color harmony going from an almost acidic color to a calm and inspiring use of green. Even though he was suffering from his health, his art became more confident, and from 1888 to 1890, Van Gogh painted almost every day.
