The American artist Winslow Homer concluded the watercolor seascape entitled North Road, Bermuda in 1900, only ten years before his death. During this period, the painter traveled extensively to tropical locations, like Nassau, in the Bahamas, Cuba, Bermuda and many places in the sunshine state, Florida. Homer had been working for many decades on watercolor painting and mastered this craft by experimenting different techniques and styles. The artist ultimately gained his fame and recovered his financial stability by selling his watercolor artworks to museums and art collectors.
Homer initially began his career as a commercial illustrator and worked mainly with oil painting, as well as printing techniques like lithography and woodcuts. By the end of the 1950s, the artist moved to New York to study at the National Academy of Design, where he continued working as a freelancer. Homer was hired to portray the scenes he encountered during the American Civil War, and he created socially aware artworks that were highly praised by the critics, helping him become more well-known as a serious artist. He eventually abandoned commercial illustration to dedicate himself to painting alone, mainly watercolors but continued with oil painting as well.
In North Road, Bermuda, Homer created a captivating composition in a rather simple seascape. He portrays a line of trees that seem to have grown sideways, almost adjacent to the hill on the left side of the paper. The trees eventually grow upwards and carry bundles of dark green leaves that cover the top left corner. The ochre colored ground is covered with cool shades of watery blue pigments, while the sunlight peaks through the leaves. After some piles of rounded rocks, a light pathway follows the line of trees and coasts the water, which was painted with a single shade of blue with different quantity of water.
To the right of the composition, there is an area of what seems to be an island, depicted in the water. Homer placed a large ship over the horizon line in the far distance, and the composition of the work leads the viewer's eyes to this final point. There are large bodies of beautifully detailed clouds in shades of grays, white, and light blue that cover most of the sky, giving the landscape a peaceful atmosphere.
