The Red Canoe

Winslow Homer concluded the watercolor painting entitled The Red Canoe in 1884 – although some sources state this work was done in 1889. The artist took frequent trips to New York’s countryside during this period, staying at the North Woods Club, located near the hamlet of Minerva – possibly where this painting was done. These trips were great opportunities for the artist to experiment with watercolor painting, a medium Homer was familiar with since the early 1870s.

Although this technique was made famous by the Impressionists – who called it painting en plein air – Homer was already painting outdoors before meeting the group of French painters. Unlike working in the studio, painting landscapes on location made it possible for the artist to experience the surroundings. The observation of natural lighting was necessary for these artists, just as it was for Homer, as they strived to capture the essence of the effects of sunlight over a landscape. Homer’s use of watercolor while working en plein air was smart, as the material is easier to transport than oil paint and canvas.

In The Red Canoe, Homer depicted a typical scene of this location, as it was perfect for fishing and other outdoor sports, like hunting. The central figure is seen pulling his bright red canoe to shore after a day of fishing. Like in many of Homer’s paintings, the man’s face is not visible, distancing the viewer from the protagonist of the artwork and giving the scene a sense of mystery. The artist’s use of color gives a unique appeal to the painting, as the light blue water reflects its surroundings in shades of brown, green, and red. The ripples of the lake are beautifully represented with long, horizontal brushstrokes in the forefront, while the background was painted with less detail in a gradient blue-gray pigment.

The left side of the paper depicts yellow and ochre leaves of a tree that grows on the river banks. The background was loosely painted and gives an idea of mountainsides. With a blend of watery brown pigments of many tonalities and some dark specks representing trees, Homer depicts an ambiguous background that provides a closed atmosphere to the painting. There is a tiny area of yellow sky on the top right corner and what seems to be some gray clouds, making the weather conditions up to interpretation.

You may choose to purchase your painting framed, in which case, it will arrive "ready to hang". We offer more than 20 beautiful models, all hand finished and expertly assembled by our experienced framers.

Purchasing a Stretching Service

If you are planning to frame your painting yourself, use an existing frame, or frame it locally, you may choose to order your painting with a stretching service, meaning that it will arrive mounted on wooden bars.

Purchasing a Gallery Wrap

If you're considering not framing your painting at all, you may opt for a Gallery Wrap. The term Gallery Wrap refers to the way the canvas is stretched, which is by wrapping it around thick stretcher bars, about 1.5 inch thick, with the canvas being secured to the back rather than the sides of those bars.

Unframed paintings are covered with a special protective film, are gently rolled and then placed inside a strong specially designed tube.
Stretched, Gallery Wrapped and Framed paintings are covered with protective bubble wrap, separated by foam board and then carefully put into the cardboard box.
