The much celebrated Swedish artist Anders Zorn was born on February 1860 in Mora, in the historical province of Dalarna, and raised in his family's farm in Yvraden. In 1875, Zorn began to study art at the prestigious Royal Swedish Academy of Arts, located in Stockholm and since the beginning amazed the teachers with his technique, concluding his studies five years later. During this period, Zorn was receiving commissions from wealthy patrons as well as members of the Stockholm society. In 1881, he was approached by Emma Lamm who had an interest in painting and culture. She was a wealthy woman that came from a Jewish family of merchants and eventually married with the artist.
In 1886, Zorn and his wife moved to a cottage in Mora, which the artist made into his studio named Zorngarden. After many years traveling, the couple returned to work on the studio, and it was completed by 1910. The cottage is maintained how it was left after Emma’s death in 1942 until today and is open for visitation. By the next year, Zorn was working more with oil painting, instead of the bright watercolor painting from his early career. The painter became known worldwide for his breathtaking portraits. Zorn worked for members of the high society, noble families, and even portrayed American Presidents like President Grover Cleveland, and William Howard Taft, as well as Oscar II of Sweden, among other notable figures. Not only did Zorn immortalize the image of his wealthy patrons, but he also enjoyed painting the people close to him, like family and friends, not to mention self-portraits.
With refined technique and a modern approach to painting nudes, Zorn became famous for his beautiful paintings of nude women in natural environments, especially in places near water, which he painted realistically. Considered the most acclaimed portrait painter of his time, Zorn traveled extensively around Europe, like in London, Spain, Italy, Paris, as well as overseas, in the USA. At only twenty-nine years old in 1889, the painter had the honor of being awarded at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Not only did Zorn make great art, but after he became wealthy, he was able to have an art collection as well, with pieces by artists like Rembrandt. His masterpieces can be found in some of the most important museums in the world like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, the National Museum of Fine Arts, Stockholm, among others. The painter and his wife Emma founded a prize in 1920 for Swedish poets called the Bellman Prize, and the Swedish Academy awards it annually. Zorn passed away in August of the same year.
