Hans Anderson Brendekilde
Hans Andersen Brendekilde was born in a small village in Denmark called Braendekilde, on the island of Funen, on April 7th, 1857. Born into poverty, young four-year-old Brendekilde was sent to live with his grandparents, where he stayed for six years. At the age of ten, the Danish boy worked as a shepherd and was on the path to independence.
In 1871, during his early teens, Brendekilde began studying art in Odense - not the art of painting, but wood sculpting. His talent for carving figures out of wood was discovered in school and encouraged by a teacher. The prodigy began learning under Wilhelm Hansen, who worked with stone and wood. It was only six years after beginning his studies, in 1877, that Brendekilde would take on painting, specifically floral paintings under Olaf August Hermansen.
Also in 1877, Brendekilde enrolled at Copenhagen's Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he bonded with many other artists. Although he was already producing paintings, the Danish artist concluded his studies in 1881 in sculpture under the masters Harald Conradsen and Emil Jens Baumann Adolf Jerichau. After the Academy, Brendekilde finally decided to dedicate his career to painting.
Brendekilde's humble background shaped his career as he portrayed the scenes of his childhood in the countryside of Denmark. Along with Laurits Andersen Ring, he became the precursor in his country of what is known as Social Realism, in which socio-political issues were brought to light in the artworks. Brendekilde's work inspired many other contemporaries, like Peder Mork Monsted, Paul Gustav Fischer, and Julius Paulsen, to name a few, all of which became his friends as well.
Ring was also influenced by Brendekilde's work and shared a similar story of humble origins. In fact, they shared a studio during a period and the same surname. People often became confused about the artists' identity, confusing one with another primarily because they worked with the same subjects in their paintings, forcing each to take the name of their home village.
Around 1884, the Danish artist became involved with the Arts and Crafts movement when he produced artworks with decorative frames painted within the canvas. Brendekilde took inspiration from great Danish artists like Anna Ancher, her husband Michael, and Peder Severin Kroyer. He also enjoyed the works of Carl Olof Larsson of the Arts and Crafts movement, and Anders Zorn, both from Sweden.
Brendekilde was a socialist and passionate about Social Realism. He was said to be optimistic and genuinely committed to his craft. He produced paintings on location, meaning he often worked outdoors in the villages. Historians consider Brendekilde as Denmarks' first painter with impressionistic influences. The artist created portraits but mostly excelled in artworks portraying children, farmers, and nature in idyllic rural settings.
In 1889, the painter's work was prized at the World Expositions in Paris for the masterpiece Worn Out. His work would continue to be praised by critics and viewers, winning other awards and participating in exhibits.
Hans Andersen Brendekilde passed away in the town of Jyllinge, Denmark, in March 1942 at the age of 84.
