Paul-Gustave Fischer
Paul Gustav Fischer was born in the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen, in July 1860. His family originally migrated from Poland, and he was fourth-generation Jewish. He became famous for his breathtaking portrayals of cityscapes in locations like Italy, Germany, Scandinavia, and especially his hometown, Copenhagen.
His father, Philip August Fischer, initially strived to become a painter but ultimately began manufacturing and commercializing paints and other materials, like lacquers for wood. Although Philip’s career in painting was brief, he passed on the practice to his son, who began at an early age.
He spent a couple of years studying art at Copenhagen’s Royal Danish Academy of Art during his teens. Fischer began working at his father’s factory at the age of 18 and continued for ten years. Throughout this time, he was producing his paintings, but only in 1884 he participated in the Chartlottenborg Spring Exhibition, in which he continued to exhibit his production until 1902. The painter married to Dagny Gronneberg in 1886, but the couple separated a while after.
During his career, the leading Danish painter was Laurits Tuxen, whose work shares an aesthetic similarity to Fischer’s. In 1891, he traveled to Paris for about four years, coming in contact with artworks of his contemporaries and resulting in a change in his color palette, as it became lighter and richer. Back in his hometown, the painter was already influenced by Danish Naturalist painters, and his contact with Modern Parisian painters caused a stir in his view upon art. Fischer was inspired by contemporary Norwegian and Swedish artists as well, like Carl Larsson of the Arts and Crafts Movement.
Not only did Fischer produce seascape and cityscapes on canvas, but he was also a dedicated illustrator and published a series of books. In 1893, he published two of his most successful books of illustrations, one for children and a book of portraits. Fischer also had a passion for photography, with a large body of work. He took thousands of photographs, mostly as a reference for painting.
Fischer’s trip to Paris also introduced him to poster art made in lithography by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Theophile Steinlen. Lautrec often depicted tabu subjects in his art, working with themes like sexuality and promiscuity. Some years later, Fischer began portraying more nudes in his paintings, like the sunny and vibrant Sunbathing in the Dunes, painted in 1916. Degas’ portrayals of ballerinas were also a significant influence on the Danish painter, as seen in his canvas Before the Ballet.
The artist married again in 1914 with Martha Vilhelmine Jensen, a concert singer almost thirty years younger than Fischer. Throughout his career, Fischer did not receive much recognition from the art critics but was always praised by the public, leading to high demand and numerous artworks. His talent was recognized by the King of Norway, who commissioned Fischer to eternalize the historical moment in which the Norwegians received the sovereignty from Sweden.
Paul Gustav passed away in the district of Gentofte, Copenhagen, in May 1934.
